What is the endocannabinoid system and how is it related to CBD

The endocannabinoid system was discovered in the 1990s and is it common to all vertebrates. It regulates the cooperation of key mechanisms in the human body.

Receptors of the endocannabinoid system are distributed within the entire human organism – in our brain, skin, immune cells, bones, adipose tissue, liver, muscles, heart, blood vessels and gastrointestinal tract.
The location of endocannabinoid receptors in the body bears testimony to how important the system is to the human organism.
It participates in vital physiological processes, including those connected to metabolism, motor coordination, physical feelings, emotions and sleep regulation.

CBD is one of the modulators of the endocannabinoid system, which
conditions its beneficial acts on the functioning of the human body.

Luckily, CBD is present in nature

  • CBD is present in extracts of the Cannabis plant
  • The cannabis plant contains more than 100 cannabinoids and hundreds of terrapenes, but only one of them, THC, accounts for its mind-altering effects
  • Delta-9-tetrahyrocannabinol (THC) accounts for all the psycho-activity of cannabis, whereas CBD completely lacks such effects
  • CBD demonstrates neither intoxicating nor addictive properties that are characteristic for THC, which is why it is not ranked among narcotic substances

Where is CBD legal?

  • Beverages that contain CBD, which lacks such psychoactive effects can be sold legally in a few countries around the world, but preparations of CBD must generally not contain more than 0.2% THC
  • If necessary, traces of THC must be removed by further purification of CBD-rich extracts
  • On beverages that contain CBD, no medical or functional claims can be made on the package
  • THC is illegal in most countries because of its psycho-active properties but beverages that contain THC can be sold in specific retail channels, called dispensers, in a few states in the USA and in Canada
  • Many leading countries in the world (USA, UK, EU) are in the process of setting up clear regulations regarding the use of CBD and other non-THC cannabinoids in food and beverages
